Hey there, fellow tennis enthusiasts It’s your girl Mia Johnson-Carter here, living the dream in Miami. Today, I’m super excited to share some awesome news about the latest developments in the tennis world.
First off, let’s talk about Wimbledon. The All England Club has received a major boost in its plans to build 39 new tennis courts on Wimbledon Park. This expansion aims to allow Wimbledon qualifying to take place on site, just like the other three Grand Slams. The plans also include an 8,000-seater stadium and a promise to create a new 23-acre public park inspired by the original design of landscape architect Capability Brown.

Now, you might be wondering why this is such a big deal. Well, it’s all about making Wimbledon more inclusive and competitive. With more courts, they can host more matches, which means more opportunities for up-and-coming players to shine. And let’s not forget about the public park – it’s all about giving back to the community and preserving the beauty of the area.
But here’s the thing: not everyone is happy about these plans. There’s been local opposition from groups like Save Wimbledon Park, who fear that the area will become a “huge industrial tennis complex.” However, officers at the Greater London Authority (GLA) have recommended conditional planning permission, citing that there are “no material considerations that are considered to justify the refusal of consent”.
The full planning hearing will take place at City Hall in London on Friday, 27 September, with a decision possible later that same day. This decision rests with Jules Pipe, the deputy mayor of London, although Angela Rayner – the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government – could also decide to call the application in for a fresh hearing.
