Hey there, fellow tennis enthusiasts It’s your girl Mia Johnson-Carter here, living the dream in Miami. I’m super excited to share some awesome news with you all about an incredible tribute in the tennis world.
Recently, I stumbled upon an article that caught my eye. It was about the passing of Italian tennis icon Lea Pericoli, who left an indelible mark on the sport. Lea, Italian number one for 14 years between 1959 and 1976, was a trailblazer for women’s tennis in Italy. Her extraordinary elegance both on and off the court made her the first tennis star of her country, inspiring many to take up the sport with passion.
Lea Pericoli won 27 titles in the national championships in singles, doubles, and mixed doubles. Her achievements at the Slam level are notable, with four qualifications to the round of 16 at Roland Garros (1955, 1960, 1964, and 1971) and three times at Wimbledon (1965, 1967, and 1970). Her legacy extends beyond her playing career; she reawakened interest in women’s tennis in Italy during a period of great social change.
Former star Nicola Pietrangeli, who was Lea’s mixed doubles partner, shared an emotional message about their time together. He described her as a sister and life partner, emphasizing the impact she had on him and the sport.
Italian former player Paolo Bertolucci also paid tribute, reminiscing about their time on the courts and the lessons he learned from her.
President of the Italian Olympic Committee Giovanni Malagó added to the tributes, highlighting Lea’s trailblazing role in Italian sport. He expressed gratitude for everything she gave to tennis and sport in general.
These tributes remind us of the enduring legacy of Lea Pericoli in tennis. Her story is a testament to the power of dedication and passion in sports.
In recent years, there’s been a growing trend of women taking center stage in various sports, including tennis. Initiatives like the Pacific Women and Girls in Tennis – Emerging Leaders workshop are crucial for fostering a more inclusive and supportive community within the sport. This workshop brought together eleven talented women from the Pacific region to learn, grow, and connect with each other.
