Saudi Arabia to have its own ATP Masters 1000 from 2027

According to Saudi media, the Qiddiya Master will be held in Riyadh in February, preceding the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells and the Miami Open. This new tournament will be the 10th ATP Masters 1000 of the season, adding another commitment to an already very full schedule. The agreement was signed in Rome a few days ago and will be made official shortly.

Saudi Arabia’s interest in tennis is growing rapidly. In recent years, the country has become a regular destination for pharaonic tennis events with huge prize pools that increasingly attract the circuit’s stars. The tournaments in Doha and Dubai, which have become part of the WTA 1000 category, and the move of the WTA Finals to Riyadh are just a few examples. The most recent example is the millionaire exhibition tournament of the Six Kings Slam, which saw six champions compete, including future champion Jannik Sinner, for monstrous sums.

ATP Chairman Andrea Gaudenzi explained that if the tournament happens, it won’t be before 2028 due to infrastructure works that could take time. However, the Saudis are pushing to bring it forward and propose the tournament as early as 2027, entering the world of tennis with ever greater force.

In a recent interview with SpilXperten, a player shared his thoughts on the expansion of tennis in Saudi Arabia. He talked about the offers he received to play at The Six Kings Slam and shared a harsh opinion about tennis in Saudi Arabia. While some players might be hesitant about traveling to such a controversial country, it’s worth noting that other countries like China also face similar issues.
