Alexandre Muller Aims for Upset at the US Open 2024
French wild card Alexandre Muller is gearing up to face fourth seed Alexander Zverev in a thrilling second-round match at the US Open 2024. Just before hitting the court, ATPTour.com had a chance to catch up with Muller to dive into what makes him tick both on and off the court.
Dinner with Legends
When asked who he’d invite to dinner, Muller shared, “I’d pick Roger [Federer] for sure. It’s easier to chat since he speaks French [laughs]. Plus, I’d love to enjoy the evening with someone who can talk my language.” He also mentioned his admiration for Tiger Woods and Michael Jordan, two icons in sports that inspire him.
Golfing Passion
Muller enjoys unwinding with a round of golf during his time off. “Hitting the ball clean feels amazing, even if it doesn’t happen often. My coach and I play regularly. Just a couple of weeks ago, I played in Cary with Lucas Pouille. Although I finished third, we had a great time at Pinehurst – such a beautiful course!”
A Day in Tiger’s Shoes
If granted a wish to switch places for a day, Muller would choose Tiger Woods. “I’d love to experience the thrill of being that good at golf,” he said.
Favorite Matches
Reflecting on tennis history, he’d love to have been Roger Federer during the epic 2017 Australian Open final against Rafael Nadal. “That match had such intensity! It was Roger’s comeback after injury, and he won — it’d be amazing to experience that moment.”
Brief Encounter with Greatness
Although Muller has never faced Federer or Nadal in an official match, he recalls practicing briefly with Roger in Dubai. “We hit for about an hour before he had to catch a flight,” he said. “I was pretty young then, just 22, and I remember thinking how different his mentality is. It’s inspiring.”
The Joys of Travel
Muller considers his ability to travel as one of the coolest perks of being a tennis player. “I’m not a superstar, but I love flying to new places. Right now, I’m in New York, and soon I’ll be off to China and then Tokyo. It’s incredible to see so much of the world.”
Favorite Destinations
He’s particularly fond of Melbourne, Australia, where summer vibes make winter in Europe feel just right. “Everyone is so happy during the Australian Open; it’s like a holiday!”
Aspirations and Hobbies
Muller has his eyes set on visiting Canada, a country he has yet to explore despite numerous tournaments there. “I’d love to check out Toronto and Montreal. It sounds amazing!”
As far as hobbies go, golf and football are high on his list. “I love watching football, especially Marseille since I’m from the south of France,” he noted. He also enjoys watching video game live streams in his downtime.
Memorable Moments on Tour
A standout moment for Muller was playing against Novak Djokovic at center court during last year’s US Open. “It was tough, but being there was unforgettable. I also beat Andrey Rublev in Rome this year — that was a significant victory for me!”
What Lies Ahead?
Muller aims for an ATP title in the near future. “That’s my main goal right now,” he said. “Off the court, I just want to make my family happy and be proud of myself.”
As he prepares for his next match against Zverev, we wish Alexandre Muller the best of luck on his journey at the US Open!
