Hey there, fellow tennis enthusiasts It’s your girl Mia Johnson-Carter here, living the dream in Miami. I’m super excited to share some awesome news with you all about the latest buzz in the tennis world. Recently, I stumbled upon an article that caught my eye, and it’s all about John McEnroe’s high praise for American tennis star Ben Shelton.
The Laver Cup is one of the most prestigious events in tennis, and this year, it’s taking place in Berlin. The event features Team World, captained by John McEnroe, and Team Europe, captained by Bjorn Borg. Both captains are aiming for a winning farewell as they patrol the sidelines for the final time at this weekend’s tournament.
McEnroe is optimistic about Team World’s chances, pointing to two American powerhouses: US Open finalist Taylor Fritz and 2023 US Open semifinalist Ben Shelton. Here’s what he had to say:
“We have some guys that are hot,” McEnroe told the media in Berlin. “Taylor [Fritz], first time he got to a US Open final, that’s huge for an American,” McEnroe said. “Ben Shelton is going to be a superstar I believe, but they are also playing superstars already.”
Indeed, Team Europe boasts a loaded lineup that includes reigning Roland Garros and Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz, Daniil Medvedev, Grigor Dimitrov, Casper Ruud, Stefanos Tsitsipas, and Alexander Zverev. McEnroe even expressed his admiration for Alcaraz, saying:
“I love Carlos,” McEnroe said. “I have to admit: I hope he plays terribly this weekend. He’s the biggest breath of fresh air we’ve had in the sport in ten years.”
With the Laver Cup just around the corner, it’s clear that both teams are ready to give it their all. And with McEnroe’s endorsement of Shelton, it’s exciting to see what the future holds for this young American player.
