Jannik Sinner Doping Case Update: Kyrgios Reacts, CAS Appeal Proceeds

Hey there, fellow tennis enthusiasts It’s your girl Mia Johnson-Carter here, living the dream in Miami. I’m super excited to share some hot news from the world of tennis that’s got everyone buzzing. Let’s dive right in!

Recently, a new update in the Jannik Sinner doping case has dropped, and it’s got everyone talking. The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has decided to appeal the ITIA’s verdict in Sinner’s case. This means they’re seeking a one to two-year ban for the 2024 Australian Open champion. The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has confirmed that they’ve received the appeal and will proceed with the investigation, including hearings and more.

The CAS statement clearly outlines their plan of action: “The Player, the ITIA, and the International Tennis Federation (ITF) (collectively, the Respondents) have been notified of the CAS appeal. In its appeal to the CAS, WADA seeks the annulment of the Challenged Decision and a new decision ruling that Jannik Sinner has committed two ADRVs pursuant to Articles 2.1 and/or 2.2 TADP, without application of Article 10.5 TADP (‘No fault or Negligence’). WADA requests CAS to impose a sanction of a period of ineligibility between one and two years on the Athlete and to confirm the disqualification of all competitive results obtained by Jannik Sinner during the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells/USA.”

Nick Kyrgios has been vocal about his thoughts on this situation. He recently reacted on X (formerly Twitter) with a simple yet telling comment: “Why’s he still playing lol.” This isn’t the first time Kyrgios has taken shots at Sinner; he believes the case wasn’t handled properly and that Sinner shouldn’t have been allowed to keep playing after failing doping tests.

Jannik Sinner himself was surprised by WADA’s decision, stating, “Obviously I’m very disappointed and also surprised of this appeal, to be honest, because we had three hearings. All three hearings came out very positively for me. You know, I was not expecting it. I knew it couple of days ago, that they were going to appeal, that today it’s going to go official, so… I’m just surprised that they appealed.”

Since then, Sinner has continued competing in tournaments like the Beijing final and Shanghai Masters opener.
