ITA and PlayReplay to Pilot Electronic Line Calling in College Tennis

Hey, Miami tennis fans If you’re as passionate about tennis as I am, you’re probably excited to hear about the latest developments in college tennis. As a young tennis player living in Miami, I’m always on the lookout for news that can make the game more exciting and fair. Recently, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) and PlayReplay announced a groundbreaking pilot program to introduce Electronic Line Calling (ELC) technology in select college tennis events.

This innovative pilot will start at the 2024 ITA Men’s All-American Championships in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The program aims to test PlayReplay’s ELC system in both roving umpire and chair umpire environments. This means that for the first time, we’ll see advanced camera technology providing real-time tracking data, visual representations of where balls land, and instant rulings on line calls. The system also offers valuable player analysis data, including shot speed, court positioning, and in/out percentages, which can be super helpful for coaches and players alike.

The ITA has been working hard to ensure that any new technology meets their high standards. According to Cory Brooks, the ITA Managing Director, “The ITA is thrilled to take this next step in our goal of providing accurate and affordable electronic line calling technology for college tennis.” Hans Lundstam, CEO of PlayReplay, added, “We are excited to take the first steps in offering a scalable ELC solution for colleges and universities across the U.S.”

The pilot program will also include demonstrations and Q&A sessions with ITA member coaches at each event. Feedback from coaches and players will be crucial in fine-tuning the system for future implementation. The ITA hopes to successfully introduce ELC technology on a limited basis within the college tennis space by the 2025-26 academic season.

Here are the upcoming events where you can witness this tech in action:

  • 2024 ITA Men’s All-American Championships (September 21-29, 2024) – Hosted by the University of Tulsa.
