Exciting Moments in Tennis: From Villach to Miami

Hey there, fellow tennis enthusiasts It’s your girl Mia Johnson-Carter here, living the dream in Miami. I’m super excited to share some awesome news with you all, straight from Austria where I recently had an incredible experience at the ITF World Tennis Masters Tour in Villach.

A Beautiful Fall Day in Villach

The weather was perfect for tennis at the ITF MT 700 in Villach, Austria. On September 21, 2024, the high was around 70 degrees Fahrenheit, and it was sunny with no wind. The mountains were even visible in the distance, not covered by clouds. It was truly a beautiful fall day, ideal for some top-notch tennis matches.

My Singles Match

I played at 9:30 AM and was warmed up quite well by Shirley Friedl. My opponent was Inge Pils-Feichter, who lives nearby and had beaten Sylvia Reigl in the semis. The match was intense, but I managed to win 6-2, 6-1. I got to nearly all her drop shots, and she has a great one off her backhand!

Winning More Than Just the Match

After my singles win, I was thrilled to have won two large bottles of wine—Shirley did the hard part, though The wine was a nice bonus after an excellent performance on the court.

Mixed Doubles Action

Later that day, I participated in a mixed doubles match with Shirley and Bruno Renoult. We faced Karen Peeter and Jacob Panman in the final. The second set was particularly tough, but we managed to win it 7-5. Bruno played an outstanding final game on Karen’s serve.

Doubles Victory

In another doubles match, Shirley and I teamed up with Elfie Loescher and Sylvia Singer. The first set was tight, but we managed to pull it out from 15-40 on my serve at 3-4. This change in momentum shifted the match in our favor, and we won 6-3, 6-1.

Women’s 40 Final

While waiting for my doubles match, I watched some of the women’s 40 final, which was actually between two 45s players. Sandra Gruber of Austria and Regina Balcune, who plays under the Dutch flag, gave an incredible performance. Balcune slices every forehand and mixes up 2-handed topspin and slice off her backhand. It was just a great match to watch.

Post-Match Activities

After leaving the club and dropping off my stuff at my apartment, I went to drop off my car at Sixt in Villach. Since no Ubers were available, I walked about 15 minutes to a nearby train station hoping for a taxi. None were around, so I googled Villach taxis, and they sent someone to pick me up. It took a little while but as soon as I pack, I’ll be ready for my train trip tomorrow morning to Vienna.
