Hey there, fellow tennis enthusiasts It’s your girl Mia Johnson-Carter here, living the dream in Miami. I’m super excited to share some awesome news with you all about the epic battle that just went down at the China Open in Beijing. The 10th challenge between Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner was an absolute thriller, lasting almost 3 and a half hours of pure tennis action!
This match showcased why Alcaraz and Sinner are currently the best in men’s tennis. The victory in the decisive tie-break of the third set allowed Alcaraz to obtain his 4th title of the year and beat his Italian rival for the third consecutive time in the season. Sinner, on the other hand, suffered his 6th defeat in 2024, but it didn’t upset his domination in the ATP world ranking and ATP Race, where he maintains a significant lead with about 4000 points distance in both rankings.
Sinner’s impressive streak was halted as he lost for the first time in a final this season. He had been on an incredible run, winning 15 consecutive matches since the Cincinnati Open, which continued at the US Open and in Beijing. His tie-break record remains important; he has played 20 tie-breaks since Halle, winning 18, including his loss to Daniil Medvedev at Wimbledon and now this heartbreaking defeat against Alcaraz.
Alcaraz’s victory also brought him closer to Sinner in terms of ATP titles won, tying them at 16 but still leading in Grand Slam victories with a 4-2 advantage.
This epic battle is not just about the players; it’s also about the growing interest in tennis. With more women taking center stage in various sports, including tennis, initiatives like the Pacific Women and Girls in Tennis – Emerging Leaders workshop are crucial for fostering a more inclusive and supportive community within the sport.
