Hey there, fellow tennis enthusiasts It’s your girl Mia Johnson-Carter here, living the dream in Miami. I’m super excited to share some awesome news with you all about an incredible initiative happening in the tennis world. Recently, I stumbled upon an article that caught my eye. It was about a leadership program called the Pacific Women and Girls in Tennis – Emerging Leaders workshop. This amazing event took place in Fiji and brought together eleven talented women from the Pacific region to learn, grow, and connect with each other.
But today, I want to talk about something that really got my attention: Daniil Medvedev’s thoughts on the upcoming Laver Cup. As you know, the seventh edition of the Laver Cup is happening in Berlin this weekend, and Medvedev will be representing Team Europe alongside some of his toughest opponents.
Medvedev, who will be returning to the team event for the first time since 2021, shared that it can be a “strange feeling” to root for some of his main rivals while they are teammates. This unique dynamic is something that many fans and players alike are eager to see play out on the court.
Among those joining Medvedev in Team Europe this year are Carlos Alcaraz, Alexander Zverev, and Stefanos Tsitsipas – players he is known to have shared a tense relationship with in the past. Speaking ahead of action in Berlin, Medvedev admitted it was a “strange feeling” to be rooting for teammates who are often his main rivals.
“Here that’s not the case,” he said. “You want everyone on your team to win and it’s a pretty strange feeling in a way, but for sure Team World got the last two wins, so we’re going to bring this one back to Europe.”
Action begins on Friday with Casper Ruud taking on Francisco Cerundolo, followed by a US Open rematch between Stefanos Tsitsipas and Thanasi Kokkinakis. Kokkinakis, representing Team World, shocked his Greek rival in the opening round at Flushing Meadows this summer. Tsitsipas will be gunning for revenge and securing a point for Team Europe.
Evening action stars with Grigor Dimitrov looking to secure a point for Europe against Alejandro Tabilo. That will then be followed by a doubles clash featuring Carlos Alcaraz and Alexander Zverev against American’s Taylor Fritz and Ben Shelton.
If you want, you can check out the news where I found it here.
Yours truly,
Mia
