Hey there, fellow tennis enthusiasts It’s your girl Mia Johnson-Carter here, living the dream in Miami. Today, I’m super excited to dive into some fascinating tennis news that’s got everyone talking. Let’s talk about Alexander Zverev and his incredible journey this season.
Alexander Zverev, the German tennis ace, has been on a roll lately. He recently reached the final at the Rolex Paris Masters, a highly prestigious tournament. This achievement not only earned him two important points but also secured his spot as the new world number two in the ATP rankings starting Monday. The win over Holger Rune in the semifinals was a testament to his consistent form this year, taking his ATP tour victories to 65 for 2024, equaling Jannik Sinner in that particular standing.
Zverev’s journey to the top has been nothing short of impressive. Despite missing some high-profile Grand Slam tournaments, he has played a very consistent season, returning to his best level after a severe ankle injury at the 2022 French Open. His determination and hard work have paid off, making him a strong contender for future major tournaments.
The upcoming ATP Finals in Turin are going to be particularly interesting for Zverev. The surface in Turin is well-suited to his playing style, which raised the trophy in 2021 by defeating Novak Djokovic in the semifinals and Daniil Medvedev in the final. This experience will surely give him an edge over his competitors, including Ugo Humbert, who is also playing exceptional tennis and has already eliminated Carlos Alcaraz in the round of 16.
During a press conference after his win over Holger Rune, Zverev discussed his current level of play: “You always have to improve in tennis. If you stay still, you’ll go backward because other players are also getting better. Jannik has improved a lot this year. Carlos has also improved certain things. I believe Novak, in the last 15, 20 years, has improved every year. If you ask him if he’s a better player this year or last year or 10 years ago when he was younger, I think he would say he’s a better player now. It’s because everyone tries to improve. If you don’t improve, you’ll stagnate. I want to achieve my biggest goals, and for that, I know I have to improve because what I’ve done so far hasn’t been enough.”
Despite overtaking Alcaraz in the ATP ranking, Zverev believes that Spanish players like Alcaraz and Carlos are still superior: “It’s good to be back at the highest position I’ve reached in the ranking so far. Of course, I want to go further, but Jannik has had the best year, with Carlos behind him having won two Grand Slams. I know I surpass him in the ranking, but he has won Wimbledon and Roland Garros—huge titles. They are still the best two players in the world from my point of view.”
Zverev’s journey is not without its challenges. He has not fully overcome the pneumonia he contracted after the Laver Cup and will need some time to fully recover. Despite this, he feels okay and is managing to perform well on the court.
