Denis Shapovalov Seeks Second ATP Title in Belgrade, Announces New Coach

Hey, fellow tennis enthusiasts I’m Mia Johnson-Carter, a young tennis player living in Miami. I’m super excited to share with you some of the latest news from the tennis world. Right now, one of the top stories is about Canadian tennis star Denis Shapovalov’s journey to the Belgrade Open.

Denis Shapovalov, Belgrade Open 2024

Denis Shapovalov is gearing up for his second ATP title at the Belgrade Open. The 25-year-old Canadian has been on a roll, passing the qualifying stage and defeating four rivals in the main draw. This achievement marks his seventh ATP final since Vienna two years ago. Shapovalov’s determination and hard work are truly inspiring, especially for young players like me who are just starting out in the sport.

But that’s not all – Denis has also announced a change in his coaching staff for 2025. He’s added former world number eight Janko Tipsarevic to his team. This move comes after a couple of poor seasons where Shapovalov struggled to maintain his top form. He’s been working hard to improve his game and is seeking new strategies to get back to the top-10 level he once reached in 2020.

“I did a trial week in Basel with Janko,” Shapovalov said. “We will do the off-season in Dubai and see how everything develops. He was an incredible player; I respect him a lot. He is a smart man, and he already gave me some good tips. It’s still early to say more, but I hope we can develop an excellent collaboration.”

Denis’s journey hasn’t been without its challenges. He started the 2024 season outside the top-100 after ending the previous season at Wimbledon. However, he managed to hit his stride in October and is now seeking an ATP title in Belgrade. His recent performances have been promising, winning back-to-back matches in Miami, Madrid, Roland Garros, Wimbledon, Washington, and Basel. Although he only made it to quarter-finals in Washington and Basel, his determination is evident.

If he wins the title in Belgrade, it will be his first ATP title in five years and will help him wrap up the season in the top-60. This achievement would be a significant milestone for Shapovalov as he looks to rebuild his career under new guidance.
