Exciting Tennis News and High School Highlights

Hey there, fellow tennis enthusiasts It’s your girl Mia Johnson-Carter here, living the dream in Miami. I’m super excited to share some awesome news with you all about an incredible initiative happening in the tennis world.

Pacific Women Leaders in Tennis Workshop

Recently, I stumbled upon an article that caught my eye. It was about a leadership program called the Pacific Women and Girls in Tennis – Emerging Leaders workshop. This amazing event took place in Fiji and brought together eleven talented women from the Pacific region to learn, grow, and connect with each other. The workshop is part of Tennis Australia’s broader mission to empower women and girls in tennis. It’s all about creating opportunities for them to develop their skills, build confidence, and become leaders within the sport. I mean, can you imagine being part of a group that’s passionate about tennis and dedicated to inspiring others? It’s like a dream come true!

Among the top players, Eaton’s Mallory Hitchcock defeated Miamisburg’s Sophie Jovanov; Dublin Coffman’s Lauren Burkett beat Olentangy’s Harshini Mallipeddi; Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin’s Elena Fleming defeated Shaker Heights’ Meredith Hurley; Highland’s Ally Haynes beat Twinsburg’s Olivia Prevette; Upper Arlington’s Alexa Roth defeated Dublin Jerome’s Ashna Kulkarni; New Albany’s Airi Clements beat Gahanna’s Daniela Guzman; Worthington Kilbourne’s Tyra Butler defeated Columbus Academy’s Ella Tsao; Chaminade-Julienne’s Ansley Violette beat Oakwood’s Mila Gelbart; Columbus School For Girls’ Priya Mehta defeated Watterson’s Julia Caravella… It is a little weird to see that the Central District for Division I will be hosted by just two locations – Upper Arlington and Pickerington Central. Hopefully it will not rain during Sectional week.

Columbus Challenger Finals

The Columbus Challenger finals were played yesterday at Ohio State’s Ty Tucker Center. Naoki Nakagawa beat OSU grad, James Trotter, in the finals. It was a great match with Nakagawa winning 7-6, 5-7, 7-6. I counted approximately 65 people in attendance. It was a nice break for me from HS tennis. It is relatively easy to get great photos of professional players while the hardest is boys high school doubles. Boys are willing to make the trade-off of double faulting 2.4 zillion billion times (slight exaggeration alert) in order to get one ace.
