Hey there, fellow tennis enthusiasts It’s your girl Mia Johnson-Carter here, living the dream in Miami. I’m super excited to share some juicy news about a controversy brewing in the tennis world. As we all know, tennis is all about respect and sportsmanship, but it seems like some players are forgetting that lately.
Recently, I stumbled upon an article that caught my eye. It was about doubles star Irina Khromacheva, who absolutely slammed Paula Badosa and Karolina Muchova for their actions after their match at the Beijing tournament. Khromacheva and her partner Anhelina Danilina lost to Badosa and Muchova in the first round, but that wasn’t the thing that made Khromacheva the most upset. What really got her going was when Badosa and Muchova pulled out of their doubles round-of-16 match against Hao-Ching Chan and Veronika Kudermetova. After hearing about this and seeing that they decided to continue their campaigns in the China Open singles event, Khromacheva couldn’t help but speak out.
“Bravo WTA,” Khromacheva wrote on her Instagram Story. “We lost to singles players in doubles in Beijing tournament… And second round they are pulling out cause they don’t care about doubles… but they continue to play singles this week… Completely crazy by taking place of teams who could enter and participate fully… I had this situation twice this year that when they won first round they pulling out… Without respect to doubles players… And also for people who are signing on-site trying to get in… Very nice rule. Plus tournament losing one match on the schedule… Respect in WTA tour, no didn’t hear it exists… Crazy,” she added.
Khromacheva and Danilina were in great form before their loss to Badosa and Muchova. They had recently won back-to-back titles in Guadalajara and Hua Hin, as well as a WTA tournament in Iasi earlier this year. Despite their impressive record, they stood no chance against Badosa and Muchova after losing their serves twice in each set.
Meanwhile, Badosa and Muchova are still alive in the Beijing singles tournament while Khromacheva and Danilina will have to wait for next week’s Wuhan tournament to play again.
This controversy highlights a growing trend in tennis where some players seem to prioritize their singles careers over doubles. It’s essential for the WTA to address these issues to maintain respect within the sport.
