Hey there, fellow tennis enthusiasts It’s your girl Mia Johnson-Carter here, living the dream in Miami. I’m super excited to share some awesome news with you all about the upcoming Beijing Open and the star player who’s making waves in the tennis world: Carlos Alcaraz.
Carlos Alcaraz, the world no. 3, is gearing up for his second Beijing Open campaign, aiming to secure his first title in the prestigious ATP 500 event. Last year, he made it to the semi-finals, and this year, he’s looking to go even further. The young gun has praised the event, calling it one of the most organized stops on the calendar and the most challenging ATP 500 tournament to win.
The draw for this year’s Beijing Open is stacked with top talent, featuring world no. 1 Jannik Sinner, Daniil Medvedev, Andrey Rublev, and Grigor Dimitrov. Alcaraz is eager to embrace this challenge and build on his recent success. He recently led Team Europe to their fifth Laver Cup trophy, and now he’s hoping to extend that momentum in Beijing.
Carlos Alcaraz debuted in Beijing last year with a thrilling 6-4, 6-3 victory over Yannick Hanfmann. Although he experienced some issues with his second serve, he managed to overcome them with a strong performance on the return. He took almost half of the return points and generated 16 break chances, seizing five and controlling the scoreboard.
In his most recent match before Beijing, Alcaraz reached the quarter-final after a rock-solid 6-2, 6-2 triumph over Lorenzo Musetti. He played well on serve and return, holding the strings of the duel in his hands and becoming the first player with 60 ATP wins in 2023. This consistency is a testament to his growing prowess in the sport.
Alcaraz’s path to the semi-finals was not without its challenges. He faced world no. 9 Casper Ruud and emerged victorious with a 6-4, 6-2 win in an hour and 44 minutes. This victory marked his 12th semi-final appearance from 14 tournaments in 2023, showcasing his incredible consistency.
However, his journey in Beijing will begin with a tougher test as he faces Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in the first round. Alcaraz is motivated to start strong and make the most of his time in the Chinese capital.
“I visited China for the first time last year and enjoyed my time in Beijing,” Alcaraz said. “This is one of the best tournaments I have played at. It’s great to live that experience again, and I’m motivated to play well and do a good job. Beijing provides one of the toughest ATP 500 draws you can get, and it’s not easy to embrace a deep run. However, I will enjoy it as much as possible,” Carlos Alcaraz added.
