ITA All-American Championships Pre-Qualifying Begins
The ITA All-American Championships are gearing up for an exciting season, with pre-qualifying rounds starting this Saturday. The men’s tournament will take place in Tulsa, Oklahoma, while the women’s tournament will be held in Cary, North Carolina. This year’s events are happening earlier than usual, thanks to the major changes in the fall calendar. Qualifying rounds begin on Monday, and the main draw starts on Wednesday. The main draw acceptance lists have been posted, featuring strong fields with NCAA singles and doubles qualification available to quarterfinalists and consolation finalists.
Notable Freshmen Wild Cards
The main draw selections for the ITA All-American Championships include two notable freshmen who have received wild cards. Matt Forbes of Michigan State, the Kalamazoo 18s champion, and Kyle Kang of Stanford, a sophomore, will be competing in the men’s field. For the women’s tournament, Valerie Glozman of Stanford, a 2024 USTA 18s finalist, received a main draw wild card. These young players are definitely ones to watch out for this season.
Columbus Challenger Semifinals
At the ATP Challenger 75 in Columbus, Ohio, the semifinals are set without any seeded players remaining in the draw. Nineteen-year-old Nishesh Basavareddy, who is taking a fall break from Stanford and is unsure about returning in January, reached his fifth Challenger semifinal with a convincing 6-0, 6-2 win over Las Vegas finalist Tristan Boyer. Basavareddy will face James Trotter of Japan in the semifinals.
San Rafael W35
The W35 tournament in San Rafael, California, is shaping up to be an all-American affair. All four singles semifinalists and both doubles finalists are from the United States. Top seed Kayla Day, the 2016 San Diego champion, will face qualifier Ashley Kratzer, the 2017 San Diego champion, in one semifinal match.
