Just a week after Jack Draper’s first great grand slam breakthrough of his career at the US Open semi-finals, he was back on the court battling until the death in Manchester. Not only did he face a rapid turnaround from his recent run, but this has been an unusually grueling summer with the Olympics and numerous surface changes. Every other singles semi-finalist, male and female, chose to rest this week.
In his first experience leading Great Britain’s Davis Cup team as its No 1 player, Jack Draper faced a tough challenge. Unfortunately for him and his team, he was outplayed by an inspired Francisco Cerúndolo, who spent two hours firing outlandish forehand winners to every line on the court. Cerúndolo’s win gave Argentina a 2-0 victory against Great Britain.
This loss highlights the competitive nature of international tennis and the high stakes involved in matches like these. It’s a reminder that even after achieving great milestones, there’s always more to strive for.
